Newcastle United fans have realised that they want Eddie Howe to overlook a deal for Marc Guehi and sign another popular defender instead.

The transfer saga between the Magpies and the England international has lasted for over a year now, and we are still far away from its conclusion.

Newcastle United have been seriously interested in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi for over a year after he impressed in the Premier League under Oliver Glasner. The Eagles’ captain seemed to be interested in a move to the North East, but Palace were reluctant to let him leave for cheap.

Newcastle placed several bids for Guehi last summer, with the fee reportedly as high as £70m towards the end of the transfer window, but Palace kept knocking their approaches back.

In 2025, Newcastle are still interested in Guehi, who is thought to be high on their list of targets in that position. Eddie Howe appears adamant that Newcastle can sign Guehi for £40m as he enters the final year of his deal.

While Newcastle remain interested in Guehi, fans from the Toon Army have shared who they would sign over him if a deal fails to go through.

Newcastle United fans want to sign Ousmane Diomande over Marc Guehi

After a successful season with Sporting Lisbon, Ousmane Diomande has attracted interest from multiple clubs in the Premier League.

With Howe eager to improve his options in defence, Newcastle have added Diomande to their shortlist for the summer, but have kept their other transfer targets from abroad up their sleeve.

Diomande can choose from Newcastle, Chelsea and Palace this summer, as all three look to strike a deal. However, Newcastle fans are desperate to sign him over Guehi.

In a thread on the social media platform X, a discussion over who would be better between Guehi and Diomande arose.

“Guehi’s Premier League proven, sure, but with Diomande £20m cheaper and stats near identical, he’s a smart Plan B if Palace start getting daft. Both solid fits.” said one fan, while another added: “Diomande is a huge talent and younger it’s a no-brainer.”

This fan highlighted Diomande’s age, saying: “Diomande mainly because he’s 3 years younger and taller.”

“DIO! He is unproven in PL, but he will be proven in PL.” said this excited Newcastle fan.

Another fan added: “Diomande, half the price. Twice the player.”

Finally, this Newcastle fan said: “Diomande and it’s not even close!”

Both players are undoubtedly resilient; they have come off the back of successful seasons after overcoming adversity early on. For Diomande, he lost a top manager to Manchester United when they were flying high but still managed to lift the Liga Portugal.

For Guehi, he had to endure Palace’s rough start to the season before form picked up. They got out of the relegation zone and won the FA Cup.

Diomande has a release clause of around £68m, so he appears to be the more expensive player on paper. However, it is believed Newcastle can sign him for as little as £45m this summer, which would only be slightly more than what they are willing to pay for Guehi.

Newcastle will no doubt want a better deal for Diomande, but Howe will not be complaining if he can sign a young defender who is coming off the back of a title-winning season for that transfer fee.

The transfer window reopens for the summer on Monday, and fans are very excited to see which players come through the door on Tyneside ahead of another huge season.
