Newcastle United could be handed Marc Guehi lifeline after deadline day disaster

Paul Mitchell had visions of Marc Guehi being a Newcastle United player right now.

The 24-year-old was meant to be Paul Mitchell‘s marquee signing this summer, as he attempted to break Newcastle United‘s transfer record during his first transfer window as Toon sporting director.

Paul Mitchell believed he could sign Guehi for Newcastle, only for that deal to collapse on the eve of deadline day.

Newcastle pulled out of talks with Crystal Palace over Guehi, with the England international valued at £75million by Steve Parish.

That proved to be too much for the Magpies, who told Palace on deadline day that they would not be upping their offer.

It has been reported that Guehi was disappointed not to join Newcastle, but is now focussing on his football at Selhurst Park. That is all he can do, with rumours over his future extremely likely to resurface when the transfer window opens again on January 1st.

Marc Guehi’s current stance on his Crystal Palace future

As it stands, Guehi has two years to run on his Crystal Palace contract. That is why a deal felt possible this summer, as it was the optimum time for the Eagles to get a huge fee for him.

As he edges close to that contract expiring, Guehi’s value is only going to decrease. That could soon put Palace in a vulnerable position, and they will be hopeful that their captain agrees to a contract extension in the near future.

However, TalkSPORT have reported that Guehi is currently in no rush to sign a new deal with Crystal Palace.

That could give Newcastle another chance to sign Guehi

The longer that remains the case, the more likely it is that Crystal Palace will sell Guehi.

That could mean that Newcastle are in luck and that they might get another chance to bring the former Chelsea defender to St James’ Park.

It has been reported that Newcastle will almost certainly target Guehi again in January, and there will be hope of getting a more reasonable fee if his contract situation remains the same.

It could be an example of Newcastle waiting for the right time to land a specific player, simply because they feel he is the perfect fit for what they are looking for. If Guehi does arrive at Newcastle, hopefully he proves to be worth the wait.

However, the one concern will be that other clubs begin to target Guehi once his value decreases.

At £70million, Newcastle lost out in a one horse race. But there will surely be more competition if it transpires that Guehi can be bought for much less.
