Newcastle United are ready to go head-to-head with Manchester United for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap.

In Alexander Isak, Newcastle United have one of the world’s best strikers and he is going nowhere anytime soon.

However, Callum Wilson’s future is unclear heading into the summer transfer window so Newcastle could be in the market for a new centre-forward.

Newcastle are showing interest in Liam Delap after his impressive debut season in the Premier League with Ipswich Town.

Even with Manchester United leading the chase for Delap, Newcastle are determined to not give up on the 22-year-old striker.

Newcastle can trigger £30m Liam Delap clause this weekend

Reports suggest that Delap is still choosing his next club with the young striker bound to have a stack of offers in the summer.

Newcastle have a chance to convince him this weekend when the Magpies face Ipswich at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon.

A strong performance against the Tractor Boys could convince Delap that a move to Tyneside is the right choice this summer.

On top of that, if Newcastle beat Ipswich it will confirm their relegation to the Championship. If that is the case, there is a £30m release clause in Delap’s contract that will be triggered.

Once that is active, Newcastle can push forward in their negotiations to try and get a deal over the line.

What Liam Delap is demanding to join Newcastle United

Having eased the PSR issues at the club, it is clear that Newcastle can afford Delap’s £30m fee and can also match the wages offered by other clubs.

The biggest problem facing Newcastle for this deal is that Delap wants to be first choice at his new club which is unlikely to happen at St James’ Park.

Isak will remain Newcastle’s first-choice striker, so unless Howe pivots to a two-striker system, he will have to accept playing second fiddle.

Newcastle have guaranteed a return to Europe so there will be plenty of minutes to be shared around the front line across all competitions, but whether Delap would be a regular starter is up for debate.
