There is good news and bad news in Newcastle United’s pursuit of Liam Delap.

The Ipswich Town striker is attracting a lot of interest ahead of the summer transfer window, with Newcastle United joining the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United in the queue to sign Liam Delap.

Delap is expected to leave Ipswich, having excelled for Kieran McKenna’s side during his first season in the top flight. The 22-year-old has scored 12 Premier League goals, but it does not look like his efforts will be enough to keep Ipswich in the Premier League.

The Tractor Boys’ looming relegation could hand one of his suitors an opportunity, as it had been claimed that Delap has a £40million release clause in his contract if they are relegated.

How much Liam Delap will cost if Ipswich Town are relegated

However, it now appears that Delap could be available for even less.

According to the Guardian, clubs will actually be able to sign Delap for £30million if Ipswich are relegated from the Premier League to the Championship.

That release clause will make him even more appealing for Eddie Howe, who is set to be in the market for a striker this summer.

Why Newcastle United could struggle to sign Liam Delap

But despite his incredibly reasonable price tag, there is an issue for Newcastle when it comes to Delap.

The Guardian add that Delap wants regular football as he prepares to leave Portman Road.

The word ‘regular’ is what could scupper Newcastle, as whoever arrives at St James’ Park will be coming in as Alexander Isak’s understudy.

Despite interest from elsewhere, Newcastle are adamant that Isak is staying, as they prepare to strengthen their striker department.

Adding Delap would do exactly that, but it remains to be seen if he would be happy to play second fiddle to the Sweden international.

With European football guaranteed, Howe will have to rotate his squad. There will be opportunities for Delap to play if he were to move to the North East.

It may come down to what Delap considers to be ‘regular football’. If that means starting every week then it could be difficult for the Magpies to lure him to Tyneside.
