Newcastle United are just one of the teams interested in Wolves star Matheus Cuna.

Indeed, Newcastle United will have a European campaign of some description next season, though the exact competition they will be playing in remains unclear.

By winning the Carabao Cup, Newcastle qualified for the Conference League. Still, Eddie Howe’s side have designs on Champions League qualification, which would of course be the icing on the cake in what has already been an historic season.

No matter the tournament, however, the Newcastle United manager is going to need a bigger squad.

To that end, Cunha is being touted as a target.

Newcastle have been linked Cunha before, though fresh reports now provide some added insight.

Newcastle believe they have secret weapon in Matheus Cunha transfer battle

According to The Daily Mail, Cunha is well-liked amongst figures in the Newcastle coaching set-up.

Having scored 13 times for one of the Premier League’s struggling sides this season, it’s easy to see why.

While the report adds that Champions League qualification is likely to be a necessity to land such an in-demand player, Newcastle could have a secret weapon.

Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, of course, play with Cunha at international level and it’s claimed that their presence at St James’ Park works in the club’s favour.

Matheus Cunha release clause after Wolves star speaks out

Cunha has a release clause worth £62.million in his Wolves contract, so the price is set without the need for club-to-club negotiations.

Interestingly, Cunha has admitted he’s ready for the “next step” in his career, albeit it’s not clear if he was actually suggesting he wants to leave Molineux.

Newcastle insiders believe they are in a position to spend this summer too, and it stands to reason those funds will increase if the club qualify for the Champions League.

Guimaraes and Joelinton could help sway matters of course but surely qualification for Europe’s elite club competition is the more decisive factor.

If Newcastle get there, targets as good as Cunha look much more attainable.
