Newcastle have apparently been joined by yet another club in the hunt for defender Kristoffer Ajer.

According to Fussball Transfers, RB Leipzig are now expressing an interest in the Norway international.

The German side have lost their two main central defenders this summer, as well as manager Julian Nagelsmann to Bayern Munich.

Dayot Upamecano is joining his old boss at the Allianz Arena, while Ibrahima Konate has joined Liverpool.

Ajer was linked with a move to Newcastle last month, for just £6 million from Celtic.

Then, earlier in June, Ajer admitted he’s likely to leave Parkhead before the end of the transfer window.

Norway aren’t at Euro 2020, so in theory, Ajer can work on his future during the tournament, unlike many of Europe’s top players.

Champions League interest could sway Ajer

It’s no surprise there’s interest in Ajer. He’s a defender with a big future and could be snared at an affordable price.

It is little surprise to be reading about other teams coming to the table and Leipzig have a history of picking up gems before developing them.

Newcastle may find it hard to compete with a club who will play in the Champions League next season.

The report also mentions that Norwich are keen, so it’s clear there’s a race on and Leipzig might fancy themselves to muscle to the front.
