Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Celtic defender Kris Ajer.
According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (30/05, pg 76), the Norway international is all set to become the club’s first addition of the summer.

Apparently, his transfer will cost around the £6 million mark, which is certainly a bold claim.
Ajer did not have the best of seasons for the Hoops, but he remains one of the top central defenders in Scotland.
To get him for such a figure would be amazing business by the Magpies.
Ajer joined Celtic in 2016, and has racked up 176 appearances for the club to date.

He only has a year remaining on his contract, which perhaps explains this £6 million figure.
£6 million Ajer would be great business
If Newcastle actually go and sign Ajer for £6 million then that would be a huge surprise.

Realistically he is worth a fair bit more than that, even if he does only have a year left on his contract.
If it happens it would be a brilliant way to start the summer for Newcastle, who are set to lose Federico Fernandez for nothing.
Money is said to be tight and so it’s all about picking up those bargains – this would certainly fall into that category.
