Reported Newcastle transfer target Kristoffer Ajer provides big update on his Celtic future

Reported Newcastle target Kristoffer Ajer has admitted that he is very likely secure a transfer away from Celtic this summer.

The defender is currently on international duty, representing Norway. Sadly, Toon fans will not be able to see their reported target at the Euros, with Norway failing to qualify.

The Lions are set to face Greece in a friendly on Sunday, and Ajer spoke to the media ahead of the game.

“With one year left of my contract, that would be the best solution for me and my club. Something is going to happen this summer,” he told Norwegian website VG.

Ajer went on to say: “I have one year left and will be loyal to the club. For both me and Celtic to get the best possible starting point, it probably makes sense that it happens this year.”

The defender has made it very clear that he expects to leave Celtic this summer. And Ajer is right, it does make sense.

With his contract set to expire in 2022, the Hoops are running out of time to get some money for the man they signed back in 2016.

Ajer has been a great servant to Celtic, making more than 150 appearances for the club. In that time, he’s won three league titles, three Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups.

However, it seems as though his time north of the border is coming to an end. But will Newcastle be his next destination?

Newcastle reportedly face competition for Ajer transfer

The Magpies have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old for a while now.

It was even reported by the Mirror last week that Newcastle were close to making him their first signing of the summer.

A fee of £6million was reported, which would be the perfect start to Newcastle’s summer.

However, a deal is yet to be complete. In fact, more competition has reportedly emerged in the shape of Bayer Leverkusen.

Premier League new boys Norwich City have also been linked.

Competition has made a move to Newcastle less likely. The Magpies have limited cash to spend this summer, so can’t afford to end up in a bidding war.

While they might be more appealing compared to newly-promoted Norwich, Bayer have the luxury of being able to offer European football.

Despite the uncertainty, some fans will hope Newcastle can complete a deal for Ajer sooner rather than later.
