Newcastle United have been tentatively linked with signing Harry Maguire, but will surely be put off by Manchester United’s asking price.
Eddie Howe is keen to bring in a centre-back this summer, with the Newcastle boss wanting to provide more competition for Fabian Schar as the right-sided central defender.
There have been some interesting names linked, one of which is Maguire. It was claimed last month that Newcastle are open to signing the England international, and he now looks set to leave Manchester United.
The Red Devils are looking to sell Maguire, but might struggle to do that given their asking price.
Man United want £50million transfer fee for Harry Maguire
According to the Manchester Evening News, Man United want at least £50million to sell Maguire this summer. This comes four years after he arrived at Old Trafford for £80million.

That would represent a £30million loss for Erik ten Hag’s side, but even £50million is over the top given how much his stock has dropped in recent years.
£80million was a ridiculous sum in 2019, and now Man United are looking to get as much money back as possible. That is why they have set a very lofty asking price, but it will surely prove to be too much.
That has to be the case for Newcastle. There is no chance that Howe is going to sanction a £50million deal for a 30-year-old centre-back who is only a year younger than Schar, and has done nothing as of late to prove he is any better.
Maguire is ‘superb‘ in an England shirt, and desperately needs a fresh start elsewhere. He was great for Leicester but it just hasn’t worked out at Old Trafford.

St James’ Park might be a decent place for that fresh start, but the finances involved are simply too much. While he might do well in black and white, there would not be much longevity in a deal.
If Newcastle are going to sign a centre-back this summer, it is going to be someone younger with potential – not someone who is looking to re-find his form after a disastrous move elsewhere.
