Not every player linked with a move to Newcastle United is a superstar.

For every Sandro Tonali, there is a Dan Burn.

Still, what has been so good about Newcastle’s recruitment is that it has largely not mattered.

Such has been the coherent manner in which the powers that be on Tyneside have built Eddie Howe’s squad, pretty much every signing the club has made has been a success.

So, even when a player fans may not necessarily being falling head over heels for is linked with a move, it perhaps shouldn’t be laughed out straight away.

Which brings us to Harry Maguire.

Indeed, according to The Independent, Manchester United have now decided to sell the defender this summer.

Linked with a move to Newcastle for a while now, it is claimed that Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag wants to work with a smaller squad.

As such, the England international is up for sale for around £50m, albeit clubs casting keen eyes over his situation believe they can realistically land Maguire for closer to £35m.

The issue, however, is said to be his wages. Previously, it has been reported that the former Leicester star is paid in the region of £190k-per-week.

Newcastle seemingly want a defender and could do worse

Given the links with Joachim Andersen too, it seems pretty clear Howe wants a defender this summer.

Certainly, Maguire is an interesting option. Hailed as “incredible” by Gareth Southgate for his form in the international sphere, surely few would argue against the idea that his move to Manchester has not gone to plan.

Solid enough at Leicester, he would hardly be the first player to have seen his career nosedive at Old Trafford in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Still, if Newcastle were to move, you’d have to imagine those wages would have to come down. Perhaps with Euro 2024 just around the corner, a compromise can be reached.
