Newcastle hit stumbling block in Harry Maguire transfer chase

Such has been the success of Newcastle United’s recruitment since the takeover, Eddie Howe and the like deserve a huge amount of trust.

Not every recruit has sounded hugely exciting before they arrived at St James’ Park but, broadly, every single one of them has worked out.

Which is why links with the likes of Harry Maguire are interesting.

The Manchester United captain is unquestionably going through something of a rut at Old Trafford but remains a key part of the England set-up under Gareth Southgate.

Indeed, the Three Lions boss has hailed the 30-year-old as “incredible” even despite his recent problems at club level.

Now, there has been an update on his future.

Newcastle want to sign Harry Maguire but there’s a problem

According to The Sun, Howe IS keen to sign Maguire this summer.

The defender is reportedly of interest as the Newcastle boss attempts to strengthen ahead of the Champions League campaign next season.

There is, however, said to be an issue.

It is claimed those at Old Trafford – perhaps unsurprisingly – are looking to sell the former Hull and Leicester star and are unlikely to sanction a loan move to a rival.

That is surely that then

It’s difficult to see how Newcastle progress in their reported pursuit from here then.

Reportedly working on a fairly limited budget and with a midfielder said to be the main priority, Maguire would surely cost far too much money if a loan deal is not possible.

Thought to be on wages of around £190k-per-week at Old Trafford, Newcastle surely will not be paying that for a player who has already hit 30 in an area of the pitch they excelled in last season.

Unless the Manchester club decide they are willing to allow him to leave on loan perhaps later in the window, it’s hard to see where Maguire and Newcastle go from here.
