Newcastle player set to join QPR on loan in deadline day move

It has so far been a pretty slow deadline day for Newcastle United thus far.

While Newcastle are reportedly still working on a potential incoming before the window slams shut at 11pm BST on Friday night, nothing has yet come to fruition.

The Marc Guehi deal is now seemingly off, making for a hugely frustrating window for the club. Unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat in the final few hours, Eddie Howe’s squad does not look much stronger than last season.

Still, there is work being done on outgoings, it seems.

Indeed, Ryan Fraser could reportedly have his contract terminated, while another could follow him out the door.

Harrison Ashby could also be set to depart.

Harrison Ashby could leave Newcastle imminently

According to Sky Sports’ Nick Walsh, speaking at 4.12pm BST on 30/08/2024, the defender could potentially join Championship outfit QPR on loan.

Interestingly, Walsh adds that there were “big noises” about Ashby following his move to St James’ Park from West Ham in January 2023.

“Another player who could be going out is the Scotland Under-21 international Harrison Ashby,” he said.

“Signed from West Ham in January 2023 and making big noises about his future, but it could well be that he is going to QPR, spent last season on loan at Swansea City.”

Harrison Ashby would never get a game at Newcastle

Now it looks as if Kieran Trippier will be staying at the club this summer, the competition for places at right-back looks intense at Newcastle.

Tino Livramento has started the season as the first-choice and has been talked up by Howe, so hardly looks likely to drop out of the team anytime soon even despite some recent criticism.

With that in mind, sending Ashby out on loan does make sense.

It’s a shame he’s not quite worked out just yet but the arrival of Livramento last summer and his subsequent success has pushed the Scotland U21 international down the pecking order.

A loan move to further his development looks the best option for the player at this stage of his career.
