While these are exciting times for Newcastle United in the transfer market, there needs to be a balance.

Eddie Howe has long stressed there is not a bottomless pit of money and Newcastle are believed to be having tough conversations in regards to how much more they can realistically spend.

The loan market has been touted as something the club might have to explore in preparation for the Champions League next season and a big name on that front has emerged.

Indeed, Joao Felix has been linked with a move to Newcastle for a while now and has reportedly been banished from training upon his return to Atletico Madrid.

Now, The Chronicle have an update.

Newcastle on alert as Felix becomes available for loan

They claim the club have been alerted to Felix’s availability in the Spanish capital.

Back at the club following a loan stint at Chelsea, the 23-year-old is said to have been offered to the club already through intermediaries.

Still, signing him even on loan would not be easy.

They claim Atletico would be holding out for an £11m loan fee and the forward’s wages have previously been reported to be at around the £270k-per-week mark.

A transfer has been called unlikely, although this latest report suggest there may still be a chance of the deal happening.

A very expensive loan deal for Newcastle

While Felix showed promising signs in flashes in what was admittedly a poor Chelsea team, it was surely hardly enough to convince anyone on Tyneside to pay that kind of money.

Few can doubt the player’s quality. Hailed as “world class” by Newcastle’s own Kieran Trippier, Atletico wouldn’t have parted with £113m for him if Felix was anything like a dud.

Still, the numbers involved make it an expensive loan deal at a time when the club are reportedly looking to adopt a more measured approach in the market.

A tempting prospect but perhaps one at the wrong time.
