Newcastle are unlikely to sign 23-year-old who Trippier thinks is ‘unbelievable’

When Newcastle United played Chelsea on the final day of last season, Kieran Trippier was reunited with a former teammate.

As the two sides played out a 1-1 draw with Anthony Gordon scoring his first Toon goal, Trippier was becoming reacquainted with Joao Felix, a man he got to know during his time at Atletico Madrid.

The pair spoke at the end, just days before it would be reported that Chelsea were not going to sign the 23-year-old permanently.

This was followed by reports that Felix was offered to Newcastle. An exciting opportunity was presented to the Magpies, who had the chance to sign an emerging star who clearly has untapped potential.

He would arrive highly recommended by Trippier, who previously admitted that the forward is an ‘unbelievable‘ player.

However, talk of a move to Tyneside immediately went quiet, and it now looks like Felix will definitely not be on his way to St James’ Park ahead of next season.

Newcastle move unlikely for Joao Felix

According to 90min, Felix is now very unlikely to join a Premier League club on loan. That includes Newcastle, who were reportedly one of the teams being kept informed about the Portugal international’s situation.

The report adds that Felix is now a target for Paris Saint-Germain, who are working on a deal to sign him. He is keen on the move, enthused by the prospect of playing under Luis Enrique, who is the new PSG manager.

For a player like Felix, a move to PSG makes complete sense. He is desperate for a move away from Atleti, but his options are limited due to his astronomical wages. Enter PSG, who are not afraid to throw their financial muscle around, as they aim to rebuild an attack that has lost Lionel Messi and could soon be without Kylian Mbappe.

Is missing out on Felix a blow for Newcastle? He is obviously a very talented player who would improve our team, but the finances involved meant it was never likely. In that respect, it does not sting at all to miss out.

It now looks like the only way we will see Felix at St James’ Park next season is if we come up against PSG in the Champions League – and what a mouthwatering prospect that is.
