Newcastle United could turn to a World Cup winner as they continue their search for a Sandro Tonali replacement.
The Magpies are on the lookout for midfield reinforcements heading into the January transfer window, following news of Sandro Tonali‘s ban.
It has now been confirmed that the 23-year-old is suspended until August 2024. He has received a 10-month ban after being investigated by the Italian Football Federation for betting.
It is a huge blow to lose Tonali for so long, and it looks likely to lead to Newcastle dipping into the transfer market.
There has been talk of a controversial move for Ruben Neves, while Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips is also a target.
However, now a new option has emerged following a report from TNT Sports in Argentina.

Newcastle interested in Exequiel Palacios
According to TNT Sports, Newcastle are one of three Premier League clubs interested in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Exequiel Palacios.
The 25-year-old is a key part of Xabi Alonso’s team right now, with Palacios playing every game to help Leverkusen sit top of the Bundesliga after nine games. Palacios has been very important, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
His form is attracting interest from the Premier League, with Newcastle, Manchester City and Aston Villa all keen on the Argentina international.
Palacios was part of the Argentina squad that won the World Cup in 2022, making three appearances off the bench for Lionel Scaloni’s side.
That would make him a very prestigious signing for Newcastle, but also hints at why Man City and Villa might have an edge. They each have members of that Argentina team in their squad, with Julian Alvarez and Emi Martinez playing for City and Villa respectively.
That could mean Newcastle are at a disadvantage, as they continue to scour the globe for someone to take Tonali’s place in midfield at St James’ Park.
