Sandro Tonali has now received official confirmation that he will not be allowed to be play for Newcastle United again until August 2024 after receiving a 10-month ban.
The 23-year-old has been investigated by the Italian Football Federation for betting, and a decision has now been made. Tonali will be suspended for 10 months, but will still be allowed to train with Newcastle during his ban.
While it is a huge shame that Tonali is banned for so long, it is a major positive that he will still be able to train with the club. That will allow him to continue his adaptation to life on Tyneside, even if it has been a rather turbulent start.
The next time we see the midfielder play a competitive game for Newcastle United will be August 2024, meaning that his debut season at St James’ Park is already over.
His last appearance came in the Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund, where he received a wonderful ovation from fans – just like he did against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
Now the ban has been confirmed, Newcastle can decide what their next step is. There will be talk of a replacement being signed, while any potential legal action will be discussed.
However, one thing the Magpies reportedly do not want to do is severely punish the Italy international.

Newcastle could ask Sandro Tonali to take a pay cut during 10-month ban
According to the Telegraph, Newcastle United are reluctant to hand Tonali a severe punishment following confirmation that he will be banned for 10 months for betting.
However, the report adds that the club could consider asking the player to take a wage cut due to the fact he will not be able to play until the beginning of next season.
When it comes to punishing Tonali with regards to his wages, it is a very delicate situation that Newcastle must tread carefully.
The club have a very difficult decision to make regarding the midfielder, in what is a rather unprecedented situation for Newcastle United and the owners.
The main thing is that they continue to support Sandro Tonali, as he is still a very young man who is going through an incredibly difficult stage in his life. That will no doubt be in Newcastle’s thinking when they decide whether or not to punish him for his wrongdoing.
