Newcastle United are exploring a last-minute move to sign Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the reporter claimed one Toon target who hasn’t been spoken about much today is the 27-year-old.

He claims there’s still a possibility Loftus-Cheek moves before the transfer window closes later tonight, with the Magpies looking into a potential swoop.

“One player we have not heard much about today is Ruben Loftus-Cheek and while there is still interest around him, I think his wages are making any potential deal tricky,” Jones said.

“Newcastle have looked at it closely but struggled to get anywhere.”

Loftus-Cheek to Newcastle?

Having been linked with a number of Chelsea players this month, it now appears Loftus-Cheek is the most realistic option.

Jorginho has been a player long touted with a move to St James’ Park. However, after Eddie Howe and co decided the Italy international isn’t mobile enough for what they’re looking for, he is now set to sign with Arsenal.

Hakim Ziyech has also been another frequently linked with the Toon. However, Newcastle ended up signing Anthony Gordon, ending any chances of signing the Moroccan.

With a late move for Conor Gallagher not deemed possible, the Magpies have turned their attention to Loftus-Cheek.

The former England international has the size and strength needed to dominate in the middle of the park, and the manager likes the fact he can play at right-back when needs be.

This skillset, which compliments both defensive and offensive play, has earned comparisons to that of Manchester City legend Yaya Toure. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand claimed, “He should be like Yaya (Toure). I have seen him play in defence this season. It’s mad and he looks super comfortable.”

Therefore, this could be one to watch out for before the 11pm deadline tonight.
