Arsenal are reportedly set to sign Jorginho from Chelsea on deadline day after the midfielder was linked with a move to Newcastle United.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners have agreed a £12million deal to sign the 31-year-old.

The Italy international’s contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire in the summer, with Chelsea now taking the option to cash in on the midfielder and at least recoup some of the £50million they spent in 2018.

Jorginho is on his way to join Premier League leaders Arsenal, who have been on the lookout for extra midfield cover. They have been heavily linked with Moises Caicedo, but now appear to have gone for the cheaper option of Jorginho.

It is an interesting move by Mikel Arteta’s side. They are signing a top player, but someone who Newcastle thought was not good enough for their midfield.

Newcastle were not interested in Jorginho

Heading into the January transfer window, there were rumours that Newcastle could make a move to sign Jorginho. However, they were rebuffed by the Telegraph.

They reported that the Magpies did not think Jorginho was mobile enough to operate in their midfield, while there were also concerns over the wages he would command.

That is why Newcastle did not make a move at the start of the month, and why his name has not resurfaced as Eddie Howe scrambles to sign a Jonjo Shelvey replacement.

Newcastle desperately need a midfielder right now, and have been linked with Conor Gallagher. However, Chelsea are seemingly unwilling to do business with Dan Ashworth due to the Magpies’ position near the top of the Premier League table.

But while Chelsea won’t let Gallagher join Newcastle, they will let Jorginho take his career to the Emirates. Arsenal seemingly do not share the same concerns as Toon officials over the midfielder, and are going to complete a deadline day deal for the 2021 Champions League winner.
