What Newcastle are now saying internally about making one more signing this week

With the 2023 summer transfer window in its final few days, Newcastle United fans are dreaming of one more signing.

The Magpies have already had a very active summer. The club have made four senior additions, with Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall joining the Newcastle United squad.

Eddie Howe now has more depth ahead of competing in the Champions League, but one more deal would turn a brilliant transfer window into a perfect one.

In an ideal situation, the club would sign the right-sided centre-back that they have been chasing all summer – and the need for defensive reinforcements was definitely highlighted when Sven Botman limped off with an ankle injury against Liverpool.

Fortunately, he has avoided serious injury and might only be out of action for a couple of weeks. That is great news, as it does not sound like a new centre-back would have been forthcoming even if it was a major injury.

Newcastle have used their entire transfer budget

That is because the Telegraph have been told by people within the club that they have no more money left to spend this summer.

The entire budget is gone, which means it will be a very tame final week of the transfer window on Tyneside. That was always the case during Mike Ashley’s ownership, but back then it meant pure dread as we had not done enough business earlier in the window.

Fortunately, Newcastle have made some top signings this summer, buying players who improve the squad and are only going to get better in the coming years.

Sure, one more signing would be perfect, but it is certainly not essential. Newcastle are right to be careful and not overspend, because FFP could end up becoming even more of an issue in the future if that were to happen.
