Newcastle in race to sign £29m star in January who has already scored five goals this season

Newcastle United desperately need a solution to their goal crisis and it could arrive in the January transfer window.

The biggest issue for Eddie Howe this season has been a severe lack of goals in his squad – something that has never previously been a problem under his management.

A glance at the goal record this season compared to last exposes the alarming regression at Newcastle over the past 12 months.

Newcastle had scored 20 goals in the Premier League at this stage last season, whereas the Magpies have only found the back of the net eight times in eight games so far.

With Howe expected to qualify for Europe this season, Newcastle need to find a solution and that could come in the shape of January reinforcements.

Newcastle want to sign Oscar Gloukh in January

Heading into the January window, Newcastle’s priority is to sign a right-sided winger after missing out on one over the summer.

Marc Guehi was a top target for Paul Mitchell in the summer but with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman returning – and Newcastle struggling for goals – attention will likely turn to the forward positions.

According to CaughtOffside, Newcastle are keen admirers of Red Bull Salzburg star Oscar Gloukh and could make a bid to sign him in January.

Newcastle’s interest in Gloukh dates back to February when they were monitoring the Israel international.

The report adds that Gloukh is valued around £29m (€35m) by Salzburg, who would open the door to a sale if their price tag is met.

However, Newcastle face interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal and Aston Villa for the 20-year-old’s signature.

Gloukh is able to play out wide or in an advanced midfield position, where he has thrived this season.

He has already scored five goals and made two assists in seven Austrian Bundesliga games despite coming on as a substitute in two of those matches.

Gloukh has also picked up experience in the Champions League after playing the full 90 minutes in both of Salzburg’s European games so far.

The CaughtOffside report adds that Gloukh is open to a move to the Premier League, but Newcastle may have to move quickly in order to win the race for his signature.
