Less than two weeks into the summer transfer window, Newcastle United are hoping to announce what could be their biggest deal of 2023.
The Magpies have been looking to sign a marquee midfielder, with the club linked with moves for the likes of Declan Rice, who was too expensive, and Nicolo Barella, who was also too expensive.
Money has been the issue, but Newcastle are now set to splash out on Sandro Tonali. Talks over a £60million deal for the 23-year-old Italian have accelerated this week, and it now looks like he is going to become a Toon player very soon.
Tonali, who Andrea Pirlo says is ‘more complete’ than he was, has agreed to join Eddie Howe’s side, and is going to sign a six-year deal with the Magpies that will see him earn double what he was getting at AC Milan.
All that appears left to do is a medical, with Toon officials planning to meet him in Romania as soon as possible, where he is representing Italy at the Under-21 European Championship.

That could happen today, and then it will simply be a case of waiting for the two clubs to confirm that it is official.
Newcastle aim to finalise Sandro Tonali transfer today
Hopefully that happens on Friday and Newcastle fans can end the working week with a bang. According to the Guardian, the Magpies hope to complete the deal to sign Tonali today.
That claim has been backed up by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. He has stated on Twitter that Newcastle ‘will’ complete a deal to sign Tonali today, with a medical now scheduled to take place.
Toon fans will be buzzing if we can get this deal tied up. While it is good for the gossip columns, there is nothing better than a swift transfer saga.
News broke of an opening bid on Tuesday night, and by Friday Tonali could officially be one of Newcastle’s most expensive signings ever. Dan Ashworth is not hanging about!

Tonali will be a landmark arrival, and it looks like nothing can now stop him from joining Howe’s side ahead of next season.
If the deal is announced, you can guarantee there will be plenty of pizza and Peroni consumed on Tyneside tonight – although that will likely be the case regardless!
