Newcastle United had recently been credited with an interest in Torino’s Perr Schuurs and now the Dutchman has suggested that his future may be away from the Italian club

Perr Schuurs has caught the eye of Newcastle who are looking to add extra depth in central defence.

Newcastle see Schuurs as an ideal partner for his Netherlands compatriot, Sven Botman in the heart of the defence, but he could cost as much as £44million.

Schuurs would be the ideal partner for Botman

If the 23-year-old were to be sold by Torino this summer, they’d likely make a tidy profit on him. He joined the Serie A side from Ajax in August for £8.25million with £3m with add-ons, signing a four-year contract.

He’s made 27 Serie A appearances this season, starting 25 of those and has even provided two assists from the heart of defence.

Schuurs was in attendance for the Champions League semi-final between Inter and AC Milan, but clarified after the game that he was just there to spectate, despite him being linked with a move to Inter.

Speaking after the game, Schuurs was asked about next season saying (via Calciomercato): “Will I stay in Turin for at least another season? I don’t know. We will see.

“I only went to Milan to watch the game, not to meet one of the clubs. My focus right now is on Torino, it’s on these last three matches, which are important for us, but also for me.”

Newcastle face competition from Inter and Liverpool for Schuurs

It sounds like Schuurs has left the door open for Newcastle to approach, amongst other clubs.

Liverpool are also very keen on Schuurs and are probably the frontrunners for his signature ahead of Newcastle, but reports last month did suggest that Newcastle were applying ‘insistent pressure‘ on Torino. Schuurs was on Liverpool’s books at 17 before they agreed he was better off returning to the Netherlands to further his development.

I love the idea of another young Dutch defender alongside Botman. The two could grow together and go on to become huge for the Netherlands in the future too.
