Newcastle considering making bid to sign £29m attacker who totally changed his behaviour last season

Newcastle United are still hoping to sign a winger before the summer transfer window closes on August 30th.

The Magpies’ transfer talks currently revolve around Marc Guehi, with the 24-year-old heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle have had a second bid rejected for Guehi, as Crystal Palace stand firm over their valuation of the England international.

If Toon officials are able to agree a deal, it will be an expensive one. In fact, it will be so expensive that it will impact how much the club can spend on a new right winger.

Noni Madueke emerging as Newcastle’s new top target

But the goal is still to bring one in, as Newcastle’s list of targets begins to shorten.

Eddie Howe wanted Michael Olise at Newcastle, with the Frenchman seen as the Newcastle manager’s top target. However, he signed for Bayern Munich instead.

More recently, Pedro Neto has joined Chelsea, despite being a player that Newcastle were keen on.

However, his arrival at Stamford Bridge could open the door for the Magpies to sign a different player, with Fabrizio Romano stating that Newcastle are interested in Noni Madueke.

The 22-year-old joined Chelsea in January 2023 for £29million, but endured a mixed first full season in West London.

Now Newcastle are considering Madueke, as they aim to box clever during what is left of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle consider Noni Madueke move

And with other targets either unavailable or going elsewhere, Madueke could be emerging as Eddie Howe’s most attractive option – so much so that an approach is being considered.

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United are considering making a ‘formal approach’ for Madueke.

The Magpies could soon firm up their interest in the winger, and he is a man who could now be available following Chelsea’s deal to sign Neto.

The Telegraph have reported that Chelsea will now listen to offers for Madueke, as he slips down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Madueke has endured a mixed time at Chelsea

In truth, his move to Chelsea has not been spectacular. He joined the Blues at a time when they were signing anyone and everyone, and that has continued since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven.

But he did begin to show signs of progress under Mauricio Pochettino last season, after the now former Chelsea boss admitted that Madueke needed to improve his mentality to excel for his team.

Pochettino told the Evening Standard in January: “I am so happy, it took him nearly six months to realise what we expect from him. Players need to improve and he is improving a lot. His behaviour now and how he has committed to himself first, and with the rest of the ideas from the club.

“He has potential and talent in the way that he needs to do the things and behave in the future if he wants to succeed.”

While a change of mindset resulted in Madueke improving, it might not be enough to save his Chelsea career. Instead, it is Newcastle who could benefit, as they ponder making a move for a player who clearly has a lot of potential.

If Eddie Howe can get that potential out of him, Madueke could prove to be another smart Newcastle signing – albeit one that would initially be seen as a risk.
