Sandro Tonali received a huge amount of love and support from Newcastle fans before, during and after the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

The 23-year-old was named on the bench for the 4-0 win over Roy Hodgson’s side, but was one of the game’s most talked about players after the final whistle.

That was not because of how he performed when he came on in the second half, it was because of the reception he got from Newcastle fans.

This was Sandro Tonali‘s first game since it emerged that he was being investigated for betting by the Italian Football Federation. He has admitted that he previously bet on AC Milan to win when he was playing for the Serie A club, as reported by Sky Sports.

The midfielder looks set to receive a ban, meaning Saturday’s game against Crystal Palace could be one of the last times we see him play for a long time.

And, understandably, Tonali was reportedly feeling a bit apprehensive heading into the match at St James’ Park.

Sandro Tonali was worried about how Newcastle fans would react

According to the Athletic, Newcastle staff were aware that Tonali was concerned about how he would be received by Toon fans heading into the game.

That concern was understandable given the situation, but in truth he had nothing to worry about.

The Newcastle supporters inside St James’ Park wrapped their arms around Tonali, proving they will stand by his side no matter what happens.

When he warmed up in the first half, he was showered by chants, and was able to take the time to thank fans for their support. The show of support then continued in the second half when he replaced Bruno Guimaraes.

After the game, Tonali took centre stage. Eddie Howe decided that the Italian should lead the traditional post-match lap of appreciation, as fans once again reminded Tonali that this family would not turn its back on him.

Howe was delighted to see his player receive so much love from the crowd, and Saturday’s game should live long in the memory of Tonali during this difficult period.
