Newcastle United intend to sign a goalkeeper this summer, as Eddie Howe eyes more competition for Nick Pope.
Howe wants four signings at Newcastle United, with a new goalkeeper on his agenda after failing to get the one he wanted 12 months ago.
Despite links with James Trafford and Giorgi Mamardashvili, Newcastle signed Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest for £20million merely so that Elliot Anderson could go the other way to appease PSR.
The Magpies are in a stronger financial position in 2025, and are ready to act in the transfer market. Paul Mitchell wants to make a major signing before leaving Newcastle United, while Howe is eager for the club to act fast.
Whether or not that results in a goalkeeper arriving imminently remains to be seen, with Newcastle interested in James Trafford.

Newcastle United discover Caoimhin Kelleher price tag

While Trafford remains the Magpies’ top target, he is not the only stopper on Howe’s radar.
Newcastle are also linked with Caoimhin Kelleher, with the 26-year-old set to leave Liverpool this summer. Kelleher wants to be first choice somewhere, which suggests that a move away from Anfield is on the horizon.
Now his price tag has been revealed.
According to the Athletic, Liverpool want more than £20million to sell Kelleher this summer.
He is attracting a lot of Premier League interest, with the Athletic adding that Brentford are keen at a time when Mark Flekken could be set to leave.
If Newcastle United do decide to firm up their interest in Kelleher, they may have to act fast.
How Kelleher would compare to Newcastle United’s most expensive goalkeeper
In 2024, Newcastle United spent more money on a goalkeeper than they ever have before.
At £20million, Vlachodimos is the most expensive goalkeeper in the club’s history.
Since his arrival, the Greece international has made just one appearance. He came off the bench to play 45 minutes in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup third round victory over AFC Wimbledon. Newcastle went on to win the Carabao Cup and end their trophy drought, so perhaps it was money well spent!
In contrast, Newcastle would intend to get a lot more out of Kelleher if they were to bring him to St James’ Park for more than £20million.
Virgil van Dijk has told the Liverpool Echo that Kelleher is an ‘outstanding’ goalkeeper, and he proved as such with his contributions towards Liverpool winning the Premier League title. If he does arrive to be Nick Pope’s long-term replacement, you will struggle to find many Toon fans complaining.
However, Brentford appear best-placed to secure his signature at this moment in time.
