Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon’s future at the club has been put into question in recent weeks, with Liverpool reportedly interested in signing him.

It has been a turbulent season for the 24-year-old, to say the least. After a slow start to the season, Anthony Gordon’s form picked up during the winter months to coincide with the Magpies’ dramatic winning streak and rise up the Premier League table.

However, it all came crashing down after Gordon was sent off during an FA Cup game before picking up an injury on international duty, which kept him out of Newcastle United’s starting XI for the next month.

That time allowed Harvey Barnes the opportunity to get back into Newcastle’s starting XI and show his quality. It would not be until May that Gordon earned his place in the starting line-up back, but it seemed too late by then.

Now, it has been reported that Liverpool are interested in signing Gordon this summer, with a transfer fee of around £100m on the cards. While Newcastle prepare for Liverpool’s approach for the player, a transfer report has shared what will need to happen before a deal can be done.

Liverpool need to sell Luiz Diaz before approaching Newcastle United for Anthony Gordon

It is not the first time that Arne Slot’s side have registered an interest in the England international, who was one of the Magpies’ best players during the 2023/24 campaign.

Liverpool held talks with Newcastle for Gordon in 2024 while PIF were looking for ways to reduce their PSR deficit, but the club decided to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh instead.

In 2025, Liverpool are believed to be keen on going back in for Gordon this summer, but they need to see what happens with Luiz Diaz first.

According to Sun Sport, Diaz has an uncertain future with the Reds, but he is still eager to stay on Merseyside for another season. The report adds that Diaz could still explore a move away this summer, with Spanish Giants Barcelona an interested party.

Should they sell him, Liverpool would then look to sign Gordon from Newcastle for a fee near to what they are set to pay for Florian Wirtz.

How Newcastle United feel about selling Anthony Gordon amid Liverpool interest

Gordon signed for the Magpies from Everton in January 2023 for £45m, a fee that some will consider to be repaid given his brilliant form in the 2023/24 campaign and efforts to help Newcastle reach the Carabao Cup final.

A deal worth £100m for Gordon would do big things for Newcastle. Not only would it significantly increase their transfer budget, Newcastle would be in an even better position with PSR after struggling so much in the last 18 months.

Despite that, Newcastle are not interested in selling Gordon this summer. A recent report shared that there are five players the club want to sell, but Gordon is not one of them.

Newcastle will dismiss any approaches for Gordon this summer, even the major ones that are planned from Liverpool.
