PIF’s eyes should light up if £100m rumour is true, it could solve all of Newcastle United’s problems

Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon is attracting fresh transfer interest from Liverpool, and it’s something PIF should seriously consider.

Gordon has been an excellent signing for Newcastle United but is coming off the back of a relatively disappointing campaign.

While he was still brilliant in flashes, Gordon did not hit the heights he scaled during the 2023/24 season. Newcastle do not need to sell their best players this summer, but that won’t always be the case.

Indeed, PIF know that if they spend big they will have to sell players at Newcastle, creating something of a dilemma.

In an ideal world, the club would sign stars to add to their squad without losing any of their top talents. That, however, does not feel likely at this moment in time.

Why Newcastle should consider selling Anthony Gordon to Liverpool for £100m

It’s a tricky situation for the club. It’d be foolish to actively want rid of Gordon but there’s no doubt the money they could receive for him could unlock doors in the transfer market.

According to The Sun, Liverpool are interested in signing the 24-year-old this summer.

They are considering making a £100million move, which would make Gordon the joint-second most expensive English player in history.

Liverpool almost signed Gordon in 2024 and could now revisit their interest.

If they do, PIF have to consider such a huge bid. Something has to give at Newcastle at some point, and cashing in on Gordon could open up new opportunities in the transfer market.

Gordon is a boyhood Liverpool fan and was reportedly tempted by a move last summer. Newcastle, meanwhile, have Harvey Barnes on the left wing and both Joelinton and Joe Willock are capable of playing there.

No one would want to lose Gordon. Selling him, however, would surely be much more palatable than cashing in on Alexander Isak.

Newcastle don’t appear to be ready to splash the cash for fear of having to sell further down the line. That cannot go on forever. Something needs to budge.

Banking such a huge fee for Gordon could be a way to unblock the logjam.

Expert reveals how Newcastle United coaching staff tried to help Anthony Gordon

There were reasons for Gordon’s lack of consistency during the 2024/25 season. He returned to pre-season late after forming part of the England squad who reached the Euro 2024 final despite rarely playing.

Gordon also struggled with injuries during the season, while a high-profile red card against Brighton in the FA Cup ruled him out of the Carabao Cup final.

Few would doubt his quality. However, his downturn in performance levels was notable as it came only a few months after Gordon’s head was turned by the prospect of a move to Liverpool

Speaking after the final game of the season against Everton, The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope revealed that the Newcastle United coaching staff had tried to help Gordon get back to his best.

“I think he tried, I think the coaching staff tried,” said Hope when speaking of Gordon’s interest in a move to Liverpool.

“He never hit the heights, apart from moments, he was brilliant in moments.”

That, however, didn’t seem to work on a consistent basis.
