Newcastle United set to quietly benefit from Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz

The transfer window is open and Newcastle United are free to spend, but a deal involving Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen for Florian Wirtz will surely catch the eyes of many.

With one day of the early transfer window to go, it looks like Newcastle United will not confirm a second signing after announcing that Antonio Cordero will join for free in July.

However, fans have less than a week to wait until the transfer window reopens and stays open until September.

The Magpies have been linked with several players this summer, with Eddie Howe eager to improve his Newcastle squad ahead of the upcoming season, which will see them return to the Champions League for the second time in three years.

However, one player they are highly unlikely to sign is Florian Wirtz, who looks set to join Liverpool. Newcastle were linked with Wirtz in 2024, but were priced out of a deal for the Bayer Leverkusen attacker who helped his side win the Bundesliga last year.

While Wirtz will be moving to the Premier League, there is one positive Newcastle can take from the significant deal.

Liverpool likely to shy away from talks with Newcastle United for Alexander Isak

After another brilliant season, it is no surprise that Alexander Isak has his fair share of transfer interest. The 25-year-old scored 27 goals in all competitions, including 23 Premier League goals, which only Mohamed Salah could beat.

Reports have stated that Liverpool are interested in Isak after he showed his quality in two games against them this season, with one of them being the historic Carabao Cup final.

However, because Liverpool’s deal for Wirtz is so costly, it could mean that they cool their interest in Isak on the grounds that they do not want to risk a PSR breach.

Newcastle have slapped a £150m price tag on Isak, a clear sign that they are not interested in selling him, or letting him go for cheap if it comes to that. Should any club bid that amount for the Swede, it would be a British record transfer fee. Newcastle would be in the money, but they would lose their most prized asset in the process.

Have Newcastle United started new contract talks with Alexander Isak?

After two brilliant seasons for the Magpies, club officials now want to give Isak a new deal on Tyneside to keep him at the club past his original expiry of 2028.

It was revealed that Howe will take a leading role in contract negotiations after Paul Mitchell announced he was leaving the club, so the boss will be dealing with Isak’s contract discussions directly.

As it stands, there is no update on talks between Newcastle and Isak, but the hope is that the club and player will sit down at some point this summer to discuss a new deal.

Newcastle want Isak to be their highest earner, a demand they should be able to deliver now they are in a much better position with PSR.
