Whether Newcastle and Liverpool have spoke again about Anthony Gordon after initial deal collapsed

Newcastle United very nearly lost Anthony Gordon at the end of June, such was their desperation to comply with PSR.

PIF were eager to avoid a points deduction, so much so that Newcastle United even considered selling one of their best players.

As June 30th edged closer, Newcastle needed to find around £70million, and that resulted in Anthony Gordon being linked with a move to Liverpool.

Gordon was offered to Liverpool, but the deal did not progress due to the Magpies’ asking price. In the end, Newcastle found another way to make up the money they needed, with Yankuba Minteh, Elliot Anderson and Dan Ashworth leaving the club.

But the rumours about the 23-year-old leaving have not gone away, with claims that Gordon’s head was turned by Liverpool’s interest.

No contact between Newcastle and Liverpool over Gordon

However, while there is increased speculation over Gordon returning to Merseyside, negotiations have completely stalled, and it has been that way for a while.

According to the Telegraph, there have been no fresh talks between Newcastle United and Liverpool over a deal for Gordon.

They add that Newcastle will no longer entertain offers for the England international, which sums up that their previous stance was simply out of sheer desperation.

Newcastle United had a lucky escape as Liverpool talks collapse

Those talks were concerning, and they almost resulted in Newcastle losing one of their stars.

And they also nearly led to the Magpies making a signing of their own, with Joe Gomez happy to join Newcastle for £45million as part of the deal.

That was one of Newcastle’s proposals, with medicals for both players scheduled to take place in Germany while they represented England at Euro 2024.

That shows how close this double deal was, and thank goodness it collapsed.

While Gomez would have ended our centre-back search, his arrival would have been at the expense of Gordon. And the Toon number 10 is much more important to the club than Gomez ever would have been.

Instead, Newcastle are looking elsewhere for a centre-back, with Malick Thiaw heavily rumoured to be on his way. He could prove to be a better alternative to Gomez, whereas replacing Gordon would have been extremely difficult.

While Liverpool would no doubt love to have Gordon in their squad, Newcastle have no plans to do business. Hopefully that is a stance that Gordon is content with, despite his initial desire to join the Reds.

Gordon will report back to Newcastle for pre-season next week when the club returns from its pre-season tour of Japan.
