Journalist thinks Newcastle are more likely to sign PL ace than Szoboszlai

Dominik Szoboszlai is the name on every Newcastle United fan’s lips right now, as talk about a move to Tyneside intensifies.

Newcastle are being heavily linked with the 22-year-old as of late. It was reported in Hungary last week that Szoboszlai is now the Magpies’ top transfer target, with the Toon owners prepared to offer him huge money.

Now reports in Germany have stated that Toon officials watched the midfielder in action on Sunday, when he scored a last minute winner in RB Leipzig’s win over Werder Bremen.

Newcastle scouts will no doubt have been impressed, but now know that a deal for the Hungary international will be expensive. Leipzig want his release clause paid in full, which equates to £61million.

That would make him Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever, but a new report from the Daily Mail has played down talk of Szoboszlai moving to St James’ Park in the near future.

Szoboszlai is not Eddie Howe’s top target

According to the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones, Szoboszlai is not Newcastle’s top target heading into the summer transfer window – although he does state that the club were in attendance to see his goal against Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Jones adds that Toon boss Eddie Howe would prefer to sign players with Premier League experience, which is why Conor Gallagher might be a more likely arrival.

Newcastle tried to sign the 23-year-old midfielder at the start of the year, but were denied the chance to bring the £50million man to Tyneside.

While Chelsea decided to keep Gallagher at the start of the year, he looks set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Szoboszlai would be better than Gallagher for Newcastle

As the transfer rumours intensify, there will be plenty of claims and counterclaims going on. This is a perfect example, with Jones disputing reports that Szoboszlai is Newcastle’s top transfer target.

That remains to be seen, but getting Gallagher instead seems strange. They are both talented players, but do not operate in the same position. Szoboszlai is a creative midfielder who can play centrally or out wide, whereas Gallagher is primarily a central player – a box-to-box midfielder who could be ‘perfect‘ for Howe’s system.

They would both be good additions, but Jones’ claim that it could be one or the other is questionable.

While Gallagher is arguably more attainable, fans would much rather see Szoboszlai arrive – especially if we qualify for the Champions League.
