Newcastle transfer news: Conor Gallagher deal is now unlikely

Newcastle United want to sign Conor Gallagher from Chelsea on transfer deadline day, and will reportedly make one last approach to sign the midfielder.

However, a deal is unlikely. That is according to the Telegraph (8.14am), who report that the Blues do not want to loan Gallagher to Newcastle because Eddie Howe’s side are seen as direct rivals. That is despite the fact we are 10 points clear of Chelsea in the Premier League currently.

It looks as though Newcastle’s fears are coming true, as they search for a Jonjo Shelvey replacement. It was reported on Monday that the Magpies were worried Chelsea would be reluctant to give them Gallagher, and that appears to be the case.

The Telegraph add that Howe’s side believe they are being priced out of signing the 22-year-old and are being asked to pay more money than other clubs.

A £45million fee has been reported elsewhere, but the Telegraph believe that Newcastle have been quoted a price of more than £50million.

Newcastle to revisit Conor Gallagher in the summer

The report adds that Dan Ashworth has contemplated bringing Gallagher in permanently today, as he is one of the club’s long-term targets.

But with the price tag too high, the Telegraph state that Newcastle will revisit their interest in the England international in the summer.

It is incredibly unfortunate that Chelsea are acting like this, but it is certainly not a surprise. Teams do not want to do Newcastle a favour as they are threatened by our emerging status in English football.

Chelsea’s stance leaves Gallagher in limbo, as it is unclear where his future lies. He could be forced out of Stamford Bridge if Enzo Fernandez joins, but is not going to be allowed to go where he wants.

It is poor by Graham Potter’s side, but to be expected in the ruthless world of football.
