As it stands, Kieran Trippier is not going to leave Newcastle United for Bayern Munich this month.
That is the Magpies’ current stance after the Bundesliga giants signalled their intent to sign the 33-year-old on Friday.
It has been a strange weekend for Toon fans, who were having to deal with the prospect of such an important player in Kieran Trippier leaving, while there was also speculation that Callum Wilson could follow him out the door. Atletico Madrid showed an interest in the 31-year-old.
It would be a shock to see either player leave during the January transfer window, and Eddie Howe is desperate to keep Trippier at St James’ Park. That is no surprise given how influential the right-back has been since he signed for the Magpies two years ago.
Now TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook has provided an update on the Trippier situation, and he is not fully convinced by noises coming out of Newcastle United that Trippier is going absolutely nowhere.

Journalist Alex Crook has been speaking about Trippier’s Newcastle future on TalkSPORT (22/01/24, 7:14am).
“Well, certain senior sources at Newcastle would lead you to believe there’s nothing to see here, he’s not for sale, they don’t want to lose Trippier,” he said.
“I’m not convinced by that. I think there’s certainly a lot more water to flow under the bridge on this one.
“I’m told from very reliable sources that Kieran Trippier is more than open to the move to Bayern Munich and why wouldn’t he be at the age of 33? The chance to play Champions League football, I was going to say the chance to challenge for a Bundesliga title, but they’re seven points behind in the race for the championship, so it’s all gone a bit Spursy for Harry Kane.
“But on a serious note, if Newcastle get a significant offer, one that will enable them to turn a profit in the balance sheet, then I think they’ll have to consider it because they’re so up against it when it comes to profit and sustainability. There aren’t that many assets they can sell. This interest from Bayern has come out of the blue in many ways, so watch this space.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if by the end of the window, Kieran Trippier is in the Bayern dressing room along with Eric Dier and Harry Kane, his former England teammates.”
Tough call for Newcastle during difficult January transfer window
For now, it looks like Newcastle have no plans to let Trippier leave, although the interest from Bayern has put the club in a very difficult situation.
On the one hand, they do not want to lose such an important and pivotal player midway through what has proven to be a difficult season. Trippier had been one of our best performers until December, so letting him go would severely weaken a squad that is already struggling so much for numbers.
But on the other, letting Trippier go could open the door for Newcastle to be active during the January transfer window. The Magpies need to sell before they can buy due to profit and sustainability rules, so letting Trippier leave could actually be beneficial.
At 33, it could be a decent chance to move an ageing player who earns a lot of money on, while the club are already prepared for when he does leave with Tino Livramento waiting in the wings.
It has been a dramatic and noisy weekend on Tyneside, and Alex Crook does not believe we have heard the end of this. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing…
