PSR is going to have a big impact once again on Newcastle United’s January transfer window.
They are the three letters dreaded by every Newcastle United fan.
The Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules singlehandedly ruined the summer window and are now threatening to do the same again in January.
PSR forced Newcastle to sell Elliot Anderson in the summer in order to avoid a potential points deduction. Eddie Howe warned Newcastle will have to make more sales as the days tick down to the start of the January transfer window.
Reports have suggested that Newcastle will have £70m to spend in January as Paul Mitchell looks to make his impact as sporting director.

Craig Hope explains ‘the money is there’ for Newcastle
There have been so many mixed messages heading into the January window. Howe’s squad is in desperate of reinforcements after multiple quiet windows, but there is lots of confusion around whether Newcastle will be able to spend or not.
Journalist Craig Hope delivered disappointing Newcastle transfer news earlier this week as he claimed that there “probably isn’t going to be the money in January” for Newcastle to spend.
However, he has now elaborated further and explained why Newcastle are hesitant to do any business in January.
Via X, formerly known as Twitter, Hope said: “Some viewers wondering why NUFC might have “no money to spend” in Jan.
“The money is there, it’s the scope to spend it & what that means for PSR come June. Word back is that, if buying, there needs to be an outgoing. If they’d got Guehi, that would have been case in Jan/June.”
January spending spree would hurt Newcastle’s summer business
That clears things up a bit.
Newcastle do have money to spend and could spend it in January, but it would only hurt the budget available in the summer.
It means the hierarchy at St James’ Park have some big decisions to make. Newcastle are still interested in signing Marc Guehi in January, but a big-money deal would require sales to happen urgently.

Back in August, Howe warned that Newcastle would have to sell in January and that is still very much the case.
Fans can expect movement in January, but without a handful of significant sales there likely won’t be any big incomings.
