Newcastle United’s financial situation has been making headlines all summer.

Indeed, while Newcastle ultimately raised enough cash to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), there is still some debate over PIF’s spending owner.

At least some rival clubs are believed to be under the impression that Newcastle still need to sell, while others are believed to think that will only be necessary if the Magpies make a major signing themselves.

Still, what is clear is that Newcastle cannot spend freely until their PSR situation markedly improves, something which has reportedly frustrated those behind the scenes.

There have frequently been suggestions that Newcastle would need to sell some of their key players and manager Eddie Howe has shared an update.

Eddie Howe confirms when Newcastle need to start actually selling players

Speaking before the Premier League game against Southampton on Saturday, Howe confirmed at a press conference that the club will need to start letting players leave in the January transfer window.

Obviously, it remains to be seen what calibre of player does leave St James’ Park but it does seem January is crucial.

“There’s not necessarily financial pressures to lose anybody before the end of this window,” he said (via The Chronicle).

“But player trading is key, and we have to trade players out as well as players in. That’s not necessarily in the next two weeks. But certainly, within the next window, that’s what we’ll have to do.”

Newcastle are struggling to sell players

Selling players has not been easy for Newcastle in the PIF era, having frustrated people behind the scenes even during Dan Ashworth’s brief tenure at the club.

Since the takeover, only Chris Wood and Allan Saint-Maximin represent significant sales, though obviously Newcastle did not have a huge amount of sellable assets before the influx of Saudi Arabian money brought in better players.

Those they are reportedly open to selling are also not easy to shift.

The likes of Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron are reportedly two of the players the club are finding hard to move on, presumably because of their age and, frankly, their wage.

Premier League contracts are not easy to move on, such is the wealth of money in the English top flight.
