It could be all or nothing for Newcastle United in the final few days of the January transfer window.

The Magpies got the job done in the FA Cup on Saturday night, but the future of Eddie Howe’s squad remains up in the air.

It is very clear that Newcastle still need reinforcements, yet they are in a position where they need to sell before they buy due to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

But who goes remains to be seen.

Kieran Trippier has now confirmed that he will be staying at St James’ Park, while Miguel Almiron’s future is unclear. He was not involved at Fulham on Saturday night, with illness cited as the reason for his absence.

There is also speculation surrounding Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles, with both players linked with leaving before Thursday night’s deadline.

It appears to be a very delicate situation, and now the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has provided details on what he has heard could happen in the coming days.

Newcastle are ‘very active’ in the January transfer window

Edwards has spoke about the current state of play at Newcastle United regarding transfers on the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast.

“Newcastle, we are probably going to talk about them every night for the remainder of this window,” he said.

“Everything I have heard is that they are active, very active. They are trying to get something done but it’s reliant on a player being sold and then knowing you can buy someone to replace them.”

Newcastle are leaving it late

Like most clubs, Newcastle are leaving it late in the January transfer window. They appear to be doing all they can to make a signing, but it will be dependent on someone leaving.

And that makes things even trickier for the Magpies. First they need a buyer for one of their players, then Howe will need guarantees that they will be replaced before the transfer window closes.

For example, it would be great if we could replace Almiron with Morgan Gibbs-White. However, there is no point agreeing a deal with Forest if a Miggy departure is not on the horizon.

There are so many spinning plates at St James’ Park right now, which means it could be a wild few days for Newcastle United – and there is still a game against Aston Villa to think about!
