Eddie Howe admits there’s a ‘possibility’ 29-year-old star could leave Newcastle this week

Eddie Howe has refused to rule out the possibility of some Newcastle United players leaving in January after a big win against Fulham.

One player in particular who has been attracting some interest in the last couple of weeks is Miguel Almiron who missed the FA Cup tie against Fulham through illness.

When asked if there was interest in Almiron, Howe confirmed that there is a ‘possibility’ that someone could leave Newcastle in the next few days with the January window set to shut on Thursday evening.

Howe says Almiron could still leave Newcastle

Almiron has been pivotal to the way that Newcastle have played under Howe in the last two years. His high pressing is so important for the 46-year-old even if his quality in the final third isn’t quite up to scratch.

The Paraguayan has also scored some pretty important goals for the Magpies, with the opening goal against PSG in the Champions League being the most memorable.

It’s understood that there is a fair bit of interest coming from Saudi Arabia with Al Ahli and Al Shebab both looking to sign the 29-year-old this month, though Howe is keen to keep this current Newcastle squad together.

Should Almiron leave in the next few days, that would leave Newcastle very short on the right side even if Jacob Murphy has just made his return from injury against Fulham.

After the game, Howe said: “It’s difficult because I’m not in daily or hourly contact with what’s going on and I’m sort of a step removed from everything.

“There’s a possibility that someone could leave before the window shuts, I don’t think that’s changed but we will have to wait and see what happens.”

Newcastle need quick January turnaround if they sell star player

While keeping Almiron at the club may be the safest option, there are a lot of supporters who are not entirely against the idea of selling the 29-year-old if the club can negotiate the right price.

However, that does mean they will have to quickly find a replacement for Almiron as they cannot risk playing out the second half of the season with just one right-sided winger.

Newcastle would also like to sign a new midfielder in this window, though its unclear if they would be able to sign more than one player even if they lose Almiron this month.

It’s been a pretty uneventful window for most in the Premier League because of the financial rules, but there’s still a chance Newcastle and Howe could make some late moves.
