Newcastle United’s long-running pursuit of Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford may confuse some onlookers.

While not to doubt Trafford’s quality, the fact that Newcastle have so many goalkeepers may make their long-standing interest in the Clarets ‘keeper seem a little strange.

The club were keen to sign him during the summer transfer window and are expected to go back in for Trafford at some point in 2025.

It’s thought that people behind the scenes at St James’ Park view Trafford as a long-term replacement for Nick Pope.

Current club Burnley are keen to keep Trafford at Turf Moor and he certainly proved why on Friday night.

Indeed, Trafford put on an absolute masterclass in a statement display against Sunderland of all teams.

Scott Parker’s side hosted the Black Cats on Friday night in a huge game at the top of the Championship.

Burnley sit second and just behind leaders Leeds but Sunderland are up in fourth and would have taken a major step towards the top two with three points.

The Clarets, however, had Trafford to thank for what could be a crucial 0-0 draw come the end of the season.

Trafford saved two late penalties to earn Burnley a point and was hailed as “incredible” by Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman.

The likes of Tottenham are also thought be interested in Trafford.

Certainly, his standing as one of the more promising young English goalkeepers around right now makes him an attractive proposition for potential suitors, even if he did struggle in the Premier League last season.

Luckily, however, Trafford is believed to want to join Newcastle and there could be an opening behind Pope soon, with Martin Dubravka out of contract at the end of the season.
