Newcastle United may need a new goalkeeper at some point.
While that may sound somewhat strange given two of the club’s few summer signings came in that particular position, the situation is slightly more nuanced than that at Newcastle.
Indeed, Martin Dubravka has strongly been linked with a move away from the club. Odysseas Vlachodimos, meanwhile, is seemingly behind even Dubravka in the pecking order and has been touted for an exit too.
John Ruddy may never actually play a senior game for the club, while Mark Gillespie does not seem to feature in Eddie Howe’s first-team plans.
Clearly, Nick Pope is the defined No.1 at St James’ Park.
Even the England international, however, has been tipped to leave the club at some point amid doubts about his distribution.
With that in mind, an old transfer rumour from the summer has emerged.

Burnley stopper James Trafford, hailed as “outstanding” by one Anthony Gordon, was strongly linked with a move a few months ago and there has now been a fresh development.
Newcastle plan to sign James Trafford in 2025
According to The Daily Mail, Newcastle will make a fresh attempt to sign the 22-year-old in 2025 – albeit that may not be in January.
For his part, Trafford is said to be keen to make the move to Tyneside, as was reportedly the case last summer too.
The club are thought to see him as an option to eventually replace Pope between the posts.
How good is Newcastle transfer target James Trafford?
Signing a goalkeeper relegated from the Premier League may not instantly sound like the wisest move Newcastle could make, particularly with other areas in the squad such as right wing and centre-back arguably more pressing.
However, at some point, Newcastle do have to move on from Pope.
With that in mind, moving for a young stopper like Trafford makes a certain degree of sense. At his age, he could feasibly be their goalkeeper for well over a decade.
Trafford will of course have to impress but certainly has the backing of some big figures in the game.
Way back in March, former Clarets boss Vincent Kompany backed him to become England’s No.1 one day.
