Jacob Ramsey is a professional footballer who Newcastle United signed from Aston Villa in 2025.

After enduring such a difficult summer, with top targets opting to go elsewhere and Alexander Isak forcing an exit, there was finally light at the end of the tunnel for Newcastle United.

Malick Thiaw became the third senior signing of the summer on August 12, with the centre-back arriving in a £34.4m deal from AC Milan.

Thiaw joined Anthony Elanga, Aaron Ramsdale and prodigy Park Seung-soo at the club and another new recruit soon followed him to St. James’ Park.

Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle United transfer news

Newcastle were first linked with Ramsey in January 2024, so the all-action midfielder has been on the club’s radar for some time.

There was further speculation the following summer, but Newcastle’s PSR position meant they could not make good on their interest.

However, PSR is now playing in Newcastle’s favour as Villa are looking to cash in on their home-grown star, as his sale will go down as pure profit on their books.

Ramsey was touted as a possible target earlier in the window but speculation went quiet until it burst back to life in mid-August.

It was widely reported that, after beating Nottingham Forest, West Ham and Tottenham in the race, Newcastle were closing in on signing Ramsey.

On August 17, Newcastle announced Ramsey as a new player in a £43m deal, with £39m guaranteed and a further £4m in add-ons.

What position does Jacob Ramsey play?

You can’t get a much more versatile player than Ramsey, who is capable of playing practically everywhere past the defensive line.

Though primarily a centre midfielder, he is equally comfortable out on the left flank as a more dedicated attacking force.

Out of 167 games for Villa, Ramsey has played 47 in central midfield, 45 as a left-midfielder, 26 as a left winger, 17 as an attacking midfielder, six on the right flank and even one as a striker.

That sort of flexibility will be so useful for Eddie Howe.

How old is Jacob Ramsey?

Jacob Matthew Ramsey was born in Great Barr, Birmingham, England, on May 28, 2001. As of August 2025, he is 24 years old.

Newcastle have been targeting that age range in the window with the signings of Elanga and Thiaw and it’s smart business as they still have room to get even better.

Jacob Ramsey height

Ramsey stands at 5’11” tall, making him big enough to be combative on the park but nimble enough to get on the ball and fly past challengers.

Though not as physical as Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, Ramsey is no stranger to getting stuck into the action.

Jacob Ramsey salary

According to SalarySport, Ramsey earned £75,000 a week at Villa Park, which works out at £3.9m a year.

That’s about Newcastle’s mid-range for their wage structure and they could have given him a big pay rise upon signing him, though it’s not yet clear what he earns at the club.

Jacob Ramsey stats

Ramsey is yet to earn a senior England call-up despite his good form and previous involvement for the Under-21s, but here are his stats for the two clubs he has played for in his career so far.
