How much Aston Villa are asking Newcastle United for Jacob Ramsey as serious PSR troubles arise

Newcastle United could be set to benefit from Aston Villa’s PSR woes by signing midfielder Jacob Ramsey this summer.

The tables have turned on Tyneside, and Eddie Howe’s side are now free of their PSR shackles that prevented them from improving their starting XI in the 2024 summer transfer window and the most recent winter window.

Newcastle United are free to spend this summer and intend to do so with at least £150m made available by the PIF. Bruno Guimaraes stressed that Newcastle need to spend this summer, a plea that has been heard by the club’s top brass following their qualification for the Champions League.

Reports have stated that Newcastle are interested in Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey, who is one of several players who could be forced to leave the Villains this summer due to ongoing PSR concerns. The troubles are similar to what Newcastle experienced last summer, which saw Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh forced to leave to recoup a £60m black hole.

Unai Emery is keen to keep Ramsey at Villa, but a new report has shared that he may be more inclined to sell him.

Newcastle United can sign Jacob Ramsey for a bargain transfer fee

Newcastle’s interest in Ramsey has been noted since 2024. The Magpies reportedly approached Ramsey during the January 2024 transfer window, which was seemingly knocked back by Villa.

Last summer, Newcastle reignited their interest in Ramsey, but PSR problems made the deal almost impossible to do at the time.

Now, it looks like Newcastle are much better positioned to get the deal done thanks to a brilliant new transfer fee. According to Sky Switzerland, Newcastle have been informed that they can sign Ramsey for just €35m (£29.4m) this summer, much less than the £50m they have been quoted in the past.

The report states that Emery in fact does not see Ramsey as indispensable and can sometimes leave him ‘doubtful’ of the Englishman.

No word of Newcastle making an official approach has been reported as of yet.

What Steve Gerrard has said about Newcastle United target Jacob Ramsey

Howe likes versatility, and Ramsey has that in abundance. The 24-year-old can play in central midfield, left midfield or on the left wing.

While Howe does not currently need any more bodies on the left side of the attack, Ramsey would make a handy addition, given Anthony Gordon’s Newcastle future is doubtful.

Ramsey would likely play in midfield if he signs, but he will have the difficult task of breaking into the starting XI to do so. Despite that, Ramsey is sure to be higher up the pecking order than Sean Longstaff or Joe Willock, who is wanted by Crystal Palace.

Howe should also listen to the words of Liverpool legend and former Villa boss Steven Gerrard, who has been very complimentary of Ramsey in the past.

“I know the level of the England players, I’ve been around it, and have enough experience to know it’s only a matter of time, but let’s all be sensible and keep calm about it,” Gerrard told TNT Sport in 2022.

“I want him to make his own headlines with his football. He is a top talent, I’m loving every moment of working with him. He is getting stronger with each game because we’re giving him the platform to express himself. He is in a wonderful place.”

When it was put to him that Ramsey could follow in his footsteps, Gerrard said: “He’s not following in anyone’s footsteps. Jacob Ramsey is Jacob Ramsey. He will be a terrific player.

“It won’t be long before the whole country is watching him I’m sure. He is right up there, let me tell you.”
