Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers star Matheus Cunha this summer.
The Magpies are looking to strengthen their starting XI ahead of a return to European football next season and they believe that Matheus Cunha is the right person to make a difference.
Cunha is having a standout season in an uninspiring Wolves side, who look set to stay in the Premier League thanks to the poor form of the three newly promoted sides.
If they want to sign him, Newcastle must pay Cunha’s £62.5m release clause, which was inserted when he signed a new deal just a few months ago. However, the Brazilian has made it clear that he wants to play for a club much higher up the table and consistently fight for trophies.
Newcastle fans questioned why Cunha is a target. The 25-year-old is naturally a striker but can play as an attacking midfielder if need be.
While sporting director Paul Mitchell prepares to make a summer move for Cunha, a new transfer report has shared how he really feels about moving to Tyneside.

Matheus Cunha’s stance on joining Newcastle United
Cunha has undoubtedly been Wolves’ star player this season, scoring 15 goals and bagging four assists in the Premier League.
His fine form has meant that there is set to be several teams in the division fighting for his signature this summer. Arsenal and Nottingham Forest fought Newcastle for Cunha during the January transfer window, but he ultimately decided to stay and sign his new deal.
Newcastle can use Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes to sign Cunha. The pair could be tasked with convincing their national teammate that a move to Tyneside is the right one for his career.
However, according to GiveMeSport, Cunha may look to head towards Manchester United, Newcastle’s historic rivals, this summer.
The report states that Newcastle have made contact with Cunha’s representatives over a transfer, but it is believed that Cunha would prefer a move to Old Trafford as he wants to sign for one of the Premier League’s traditional ‘big-six’ clubs.
Furthermore, the report claims that Wolves are expecting Cunha to leave the club this summer, even after signing his new deal in January.
Can Newcastle United afford Matheus Cunha’s £62.5m price tag?
There is no doubt that Newcastle will have to dig deep into their pockets to fork out the money to sign Cunha this summer. The Brazilian would become Newcastle’s second-most expensive signing in their history if he joins, with Alexander Isak’s move in 2022 the only deal to succeed that.
Newcastle have struggled with PSR over the last two seasons, with player sales becoming more of a common theme to ensure the club avoids any further charges or even a points deduction.

However, it is believed that Newcastle will have a healthy transfer budget in order to spend this summer, thanks to their sensible approach to the last three transfer windows.
Newcastle will receive a £73m PSR boost in July when the heavy spending from three years ago drops off the FFP cycle. Their £320m turnover also means that the club are in a good position financially.
European football will also give the Magpies a larger prize pot at the end of next season, ensuring any potential losses can be reduced.
