Newcastle United have been linked with a number of different defenders this summer.
Indeed, Marc Guehi looks like the primary target for Newcastle, although the club have frequently been rejected when making offers for the Crystal Palace star.
Such is the impasse in the Guehi talks, sporting director Paul Mitchell is said to be looking at potential alternatives.
Eddie Howe, after all, admitted the defence needing improving at the end of last season, following an alarming drop-off in the number of goals they conceded when compared to the 2022/23 campaign.
Plenty of names have been linked, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba.
Another of the targets touted is playing much closer to home, however.
Joe Gomez, hailed as a “sensational footballer” by former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been mooted as a potential Guehi alternative.
Interestingly, Newcastle are said to have even planned a medical for the England defender back in June and were reportedly prepared to sign him for £45m if a deal to sell Anthony Gordon to the Reds had to be struck to meet PSR requirements.
Gomez was recently left out of the Liverpool squad in order to consider his next steps amid a potential move away but more insight has now emerged.

How Liverpool really feel about selling Joe Gomez after links with Newcastle
According to The Independent, however, the Merseyside giants have little intention of trying to force Gomez out of Anfield.
While they have allowed him to explore options, Arne Slot is said to have offered the former Charlton youngster a lifeline and the fact Liverpool would need to sign a replacement means they are not considering actively forcing him out.
Joe Gomez isn’t the only alternative Newcastle have to Marc Guehi
With Newcastle needing to consider other options in case the Guehi deal does not come to fruition, Gomez is certainly a logical target.
He, however, isn’t the only one.
Former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is also thought to be on the radar, should the Dane leave Barcelona this summer.
