Newcastle United are interested in the signing of a new defender.

It was an area Eddie Howe admitted needing improving upon at the end of last season and work has already been done to strengthen it.

Newcastle have signed Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer but are not stopping there.

Indeed, they have made a series of bids for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, only to have been snubbed at every turn. Now, sporting director Paul Mitchell is reportedly considering potential alternatives to the England star.

One of the defenders previously of interest to the club is Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, also an England international of course.

In fact, Newcastle are said to have planned a medical for Gomez in June, in case a PSR-imposed deal to sell Anthony Gordon to the Anfield giants had actually needed to be forced through. In that event, Gomez may have come in the opposite direction.

Gomez ultimately stayed on Merseyside, though that may not be a long-term arrangement.

Fabrizio Romano has provided an update.

The noted transfer insider confirmed on X over the course of the weekend that the former Charlton youngster was left out of the Liverpool squad who beat Ipswich as he looks for a potential new club during what remains of the transfer window.

Joe Gomez has been a Newcastle target for years

The interest in Gomez is believed to be relatively long-standing from a Newcastle perspective.

The 27-year-old was being linked with a move to St James’ Park even two years ago, given the competition for places at Liverpool.

Experienced in the Premier League, he would be a logical alternative to Guehi, albeit his injury record is reasonably concerning.

According to Transfermarkt data, Gomez has missed 246 games through injuries since joining Liverpool in 2015.

Perhaps that doesn’t tell the whole story as to his lack of game time given the competition for places too but with the fitness issues Newcastle suffered last season in mind, it’s certainly worth considering.
