An exciting target emerged over the weekend, with Newcastle United linked with signing Serge Gnabry.
The Magpies are in the market for a winger this summer, and that is where most of Newcastle United’s £100million transfer budget is expected to go.
Eddie Howe has already missed out on Michael Olise, with the 22-year-old opting to sign for Bayern Munich instead. The lure of Champions League football tempted Olise to Bavaria, but his move could open up another door for Newcastle United.
Newcastle United linked with signing Serge Gnabry
It was reported on Sunday that Newcastle United are interested in signing Serge Gnabry from Bayern Munich.
The Sunday Mirror claimed that the Magpies could offer £40million for the Germany international, which is the same amount as what Anthony Gordon cost in January 2023.
Gnabry has taken his game to new heights since leaving Arsenal, and has gone on to win it all at Bayern Munich.
He would be a wildly ambitious target for Newcastle, but a new report from Germany suggests that a deal could be done if Toon officials can convince the 29-year-old to swap the Allianz Arena for St James’ Park.
How Bayern Munich feel about selling Gnabry this summer
According to Bild, Bayern are interested in selling Gnabry this summer.
They would be willing to do a deal with Newcastle or any suitor ahead of the 2024/25 season starting, having already strengthened in attack with the arrival of Olise.
However, Bild add that Gnabry would actually like to continue with Bayern Munich and is looking to sign a new contract.
Newcastle are looking in Germany, but will surely target someone younger
With Paul Mitchell now in charge of Newcastle’s recruitment, the Magpies could cast their net further afield.
iNews have claimed that Toon officials are looking at the French and German markets extensively, as they prepare to hold a recruitment meeting this week.
With Newcastle needing a winger and eyeing up players from Germany, rumours of interest in Gnabry certainly adds up. However, it would come as a major surprise if he arrived at St James’ Park.
Gnabry is an exceptional talent who has lit up the Bundesliga, but he is probably a bit older than what Newcastle are looking for. He is 29, whereas the Magpies usually focus their efforts on signing up and coming players rather than those that are the finished article.
Of course, there could be a change of strategy with Mitchell in charge, but it would be a surprise if he did try to bring Gnabry to Tyneside.
There is also the added complication of Gnabry not wanting to leave Bayern. He wants to stay put, while Newcastle’s lack of European football could make convincing the attacker to leave even more challenging.
With all things considered, it feels incredibly unlikely that Gnabry will be signing for Newcastle United this summer.
