How much Newcastle have left to spend in the summer transfer window with two positions still ‘priorities’

Newcastle have faced a frantic transfer window thus far as they scrambled to comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules. Now though, the club can look at the transfer market more positively.

In some ways last month’s frantic scramble to adhere to the Premier League’s financial rules could be seen in a positive light, having managed to avoid the sale of star names such as Anthony Gordon, who reportedly had his head turned by Liverpool, as well as Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes.

However, Newcastle had to part ways with academy graduate, Elliot Anderson and teenage sensation, Yankuba Minteh, deals which left some supporters disappointed.

As June ticked over to July, a new financial year came, with Newcastle not having to worry as much about PSR. The club’s transfer kitty has been boosted by new sponsorship deals with Adidas and Sela, respectively, and prize money from their Champions League exploits last season.

This means that Newcastle are far from finished in the transfer market this summer – and there are key positions that need improvement.

The Telegraph have reported that Newcastle’s transfer budget is healthy, with the club able to spend in ‘excess’ of £100m on new arrivals.

This figure does not include money gained from expected departures this summer, with several players linked with moves away from the club.

Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron, Martin Dubravka and Kieran Trippier could leave Newcastle before the end of the window.

Newcastle know they have to begin to trade wisely in the window, the club were reluctant to lose Wilson, Almiron and Trippier in the middle of an injury crisis, with all three players attracting interest from clubs in January.

With pre-season approaching, the club may be more receptive to selling the previously mentioned players.

Newcastle keen to improve two key positions

The report also Eddie Howe has identified a right-sided forward and another centre-back as ‘priorities’ for Newcastle before the start of the new season.

Despite the stressful nature of Newcastle’s transfer window so far, the club has managed to bring new players to the club.

The Magpies confirmed the signing of Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth, as well as two goalkeepers in John Ruddy, who arrived on a free transfer from Birmingham City, and Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest.

The club also confirmed the permanent signing of Lewis Hall from Chelsea following a successful loan spell last season.

Newcastle attempted to sign Bayern Munich-bound Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, and have been linked with West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.

Newcastle have also shown interest in AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw as the club aim to bring in more new faces before pre-season is in full swing.

No new signings are imminent, however, with Paul Mitchell now announced as the club’s new Sporting Director, it is thought the club’s transfer business will gather pace.
