Newcastle United struck gold in January 2023 when they signed Anthony Gordon from Everton.

The Magpies fast-tracked their interest in the winger, having initially started the month with no interest in splashing out on a marquee arrival.

But they changed their mind to bring in Anthony Gordon, and what an inspired decision that turned out to be.

There was some scepticism at first and it took him a while to get going, but the 22-year-old is now proving himself to be a superstar in black and white.

His first full season as a Newcastle United player is going spectacularly well, with Gordon boasting six goals and eight assists in all competitions.

He has been completely transformed since moving to Tyneside, having looked like a broken man when he left Everton. It was an extremely difficult time for Gordon, who left his boyhood in controversial fashion at a time when the Toffees were seriously struggling.

The Toon number 10 was hounded by fans before he made the move up north, but it has all worked out for the best. Newcastle got a sensational player, and Everton, who needed the financial boost, have rebuilt.

But almost a year on, how does Gordon now feel about leaving Everton? The Athletic has the answer.

Everton exit is still painful for Newcastle star Anthony Gordon

According to the Athletic, Gordon still believes that his Everton exit was ‘painful’.

That was probably reinforced to him late last year when Newcastle visited Goodison Park. Gordon was the subject of ridicule all night, while he was unable to influence proceedings in the way that he would have wanted.

It ended up being a miserable night for Gordon. He was berated for the entire game as Eddie Howe’s side fell to a 3-0 defeat.

It will be interesting to see if the scars of his Everton exit ever heal. He was previously adored on Merseyside, but that quickly turned to hatred when his move to Newcastle was reaching its conclusion.

He was put in a poor position by Everton. He was slammed for not turning up to training, but the Athletic state that he was actually told to go and negotiate with Newcastle by Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri.

It was a messy situation that has worked out in the end, but there is still a tinge of sadness surrounding Anthony Gordon’s Everton departure.
