Anthony Gordon was of course the subject of abuse as Everton beat Newcastle United on Thursday night.

The winger left Everton under a cloud last January and has since gone on to star for Newcastle but was far from his best on a miserable night for Eddie Howe’s side at Goodison Park.

Such was the intense feeling of ill-will towards the 22-year-old, sections of the home support even mistook Bruno Guimaraes for Gordon when booing intensely.

The reaction, of course, is only natural in football. Given the manner of his exit, Gordon was never going to be particularly well received and beating him on his return would have been sweet, as painful as that is to consider.

Indeed, it seems the Everton fans had even more fun in the dying embers of the game.

Anthony Gordon: What Everton fans chanted to Newcastle star in the 89th minute

Safe in the knowledge their team had romped to a victory and before their third goal, Everton fans took to mocking Gordon again.

According to Sky Sports’ LIVE blog, chants of “Gordon, what’s the score?” rang around the stadium in the 89th minute.

Anthony Gordon: Frustration for Newcastle star

Having missed an excellent chance before Everton scored, it would be fair to say Gordon struggled on his return to his former home.

Though a slight injury worry leading up to the game and the fact he’s had to play so often of late are perhaps mitigating factors, it will do little to take away some of the frustration.

The only thing Gordon can do now is try and get back on the horse. There are two huge games coming up against Tottenham and AC Milan and Newcastle need their star man at his best.

Touted as one of the best players in the Premier League this season, one poor performance does not change what a fantastic few months it has been.
