Former Newcastle United winger Nobby Solano believes that Anthony Gordon is now a ‘different player’ after almost a full year on Tyneside.

With the January transfer window looming, we are approaching the one year anniversary of Anthony Gordon signing for Newcastle United.

He arrived at the beginning of 2023, costing £45million from Everton. It looked like a lot of money at the time, especially for a player who was not massively popular on Tyneside.

His first few months in the team were tough too. Gordon struggled to have any kind of impact, with the Toon Army just hoping he would come good in the future.

That future is now, with the 22-year-old proving to be one of Newcastle’s best players this season. He has got six goals and six assists already, and has taken his game to a completely new level.

The winger has massively kicked on under Eddie Howe, and former Magpie Nobby Solano believes it will eventually result in Gordon playing for England.

Solano buzzing about Gordon’s Newcastle United transformation

Solano has appeared on TalkSPORT on Tuesday (9:14am) and was asked about Gordon possibly playing for England by host Jeff Stelling.

Stelling: “Anthony Gordon, a lot of people raised eyebrows when he first went to Newcastle from Everton, do you think he’s doing enough to maybe be in contention for England for the European Championships?”

Solano: “Yeah of course, I think in England it’s always really tough for any player. You have so much quality around in the Premier League for English players.

“I’m so pleased with Gordon and how improved he is. He arrived into Newcastle after a controversial situation with Eddie, Eddie building his boy again and building his confidence and now he’s a different player.

“So, to me, I think England got a great opportunity, this is a player that has to be in the national team.”

Anthony Gordon will play for England

2023 is going to end with Anthony Gordon still never playing for England. If that is still the case this time next year then something has gone massively wrong.

Newcastle’s number 10 looks destined for a callup from Gareth Southgate in 2024, with Gordon in with a shout of representing the Three Lions at the Euros.

To do that, he will need to keep impressing in black and white. That is bound to happen, as he just keeps getting better and better under Eddie Howe.

Gordon is playing the best football of his career and looks more confident than ever. He deserves huge credit for that, but so does Howe. He has taken Gordon to a completely new level, and there are now no question marks over why Newcastle spent so much money on him at the beginning of the year.
