Eddie Howe has sent a warning about Newcastle United’s transfer strategy in 2025.
It is common knowledge throughout the Newcastle fanbase that the club continues to be hamstrung by the Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Newcastle were at risk of a points deduction if they breached the regulations so Howe was forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh in the summer to balance the books.
The choice was taken out of Newcastle’s hands, but under PIF the club have been working hard to raise revenue so that more money can be invested in the first-team squad.
Unfortunately, that is a long-term project and Howe warned it will be a quiet January for Newcastle as the club continues to manage its finances. His latest comments are even more concerning.

‘Business logic’ will dictate Newcastle United’s transfer business
Eddie Howe has built a Newcastle team capable of competing for Champions League qualification. The Magpies currently sit fifth in the Premier League and are well in the race for Europe.
But the financial restraints threaten to tear the squad apart. Newcastle may have to sell a big star in 2025 to escape the shackles of PSR, but any sale would hardly go down well with the fanbase.
Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s trip to Arsenal on Tuesday evening, Howe admitted that Newcastle’s transfer business will be dictated by “business logic” rather than “football logic”.
Howe said: “The business logic is taking over from the football logic.
“There may be football decisions you’d like to make. Nothing was bigger than the previous summer when we had to lose two highly promising young players – we were forced to, we had no choice.
“That is very much the business taking over from the football. I think we are still in that position.”
Newcastle United may have to sell a mega star
Over the summer, Newcastle fought off interest in their biggest stars from several Premier League rivals.
Manchester City were linked to Bruno Guimaraes but turned away from his £100m release clause. Liverpool monitored Anthony Gordon before he signed a new long-term deal on Tyneside and Arsenal wanted to sign Alexander Isak.

Despite the quiet news in terms of incomings, Newcastle did superbly well to keep hold of their three biggest stars.
Unfortunately, Howe’s comments seem as though he is preparing for an unpopular sale that is taken out of his hands by higher powers.
Returning to the Champions League would provide a big boost to the club’s finances and income – qualifying this season has just become even more important.
