Paul Mitchell must ensure Newcastle avoid a repeat of the summer transfer window.
Newcastle’s desire to improve across multiple positions was amplified when they failed to land key targets in the summer.
The pursuit of Marc Guehi was widely reported, but the club failed to get the deal over the line. Newcastle’s bids for Guehi were rejected by Crystal Palace.
Toon boss Eddie Howe wants to sign a striker, winger and goalkeeper in January – targets have been identified for each position for Paul Mitchell to chase.
Despite Newcastle signing William Osula in the summer, Howe is keen to find a good backup for Alexander Isak. Callum Wilson’s injuries mean signing a striker is more urgent.
Now, a player linked with a move to Newcastle has reportedly begun negotiations with Premier League teams ahead of a summer move.

Newcastle target Jonathan David enters pre-contract talks
Jonathan David is enjoying a fine season in Ligue 1 with Lille. The Canadian has scored 17 goals in all competitions this season, bagging five assists in the process.
Newcastle hold an interest in David who is out of contract in the summer. However, the Magpies aren’t alone in their interest.
According to Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth four Premier League clubs have entered pre-contract discussions for the 24-year-old. Clubs outside of France can now speak with David to tempt a move away from the club he has spent four years with.
The post doesn’t name the four clubs, but it was recently reported that Fulham held talks with David over a potential move.
Sheth also states that offers have also been made by two clubs in Italy.
David scored a brace against Brest, one of Newcastle’s Sela Cup opponents, which earned him a spot on WhoScored’s Ligue 1 Team of the Week. The Canadian has been hailed as a ‘superstar’ by Canadian teammate Jonothan Osorio [The Athletic].
Jonathan David compared to Alexander Isak
Both strikers are in top form at the moment, Isak’s finish in Newcastle’s win against Tottenham made it seven straight games with a goal – putting him just four games off equalling Jamie Vardy’s record.
David’s goals have come in waves so far this season. A hat-trick against Le Harve and braces against Montpellier and Brest are the standouts.
| Appearances (All competitions) | Goals | Assists | |
| Jonathan David | 26 | 17 | 2 |
| Alexander Isak | 21 | 14 | 4 |
Stylistically, both players are known for their dribbling, passing and ability to hold onto the ball.
Like Howe’s Newcastle, Lille likes to play possession-based football reliant on building from the back. Should David be signed, he shouldn’t have a problem adapting to life on Tyneside.
